My 9 years old Big Transition

“Kayoko, wake up! I’m going to start up a company in Shanghai and we’re going to move there right away!”

Confused,
I opened my blurry eyes, slowly sat up, and turned my head toward a figure of my mother frantically getting ready for work.

“We’re going to leave Tokyo. Our life in Shanghai is going to be new and exciting!”she added.
I sat there wishing it was a dream as reality sank in.

It wasn’t a dream. At nine years old, the reality was that I would have to leave my little apartment in Tokyo,
leave my friends at school, and leave everything that I have ever known.

It wasn’t only what I was leaving behind;
it was the new language I had to learn and the unknown consequences of my new life.
12 years later, I still remember that morning and those exact words.

Why? Perhaps it is due to the fact that every experience after those words reverberated in the universe molded me into the determined, innovative, and passionate woman I am today.

My experiences have prepared me for an academic career at KMD in every way possible.
If I could talk to the nine year-old Kayoko, I would tell her,

“Everything is going to be ok.”
