KMD Thesis Template

ver 0.16 (Last Edited: April 20th, 2016, previously maintained by Dr. Daisuke Uriu)

Here are the templates for KMD Master's Thesis, which faculties strongly recommend to use. These are still beta version and there might be errors. If you find any problem, ask yfaculty<at>kmd.keio.ac.jp.

Before using this template, please check the instructions in the KMD Class Registration Guideline: (English) and/or (Japanese)

From academic year 2012, the thesis that does not follow the official guideline and format WILL BE REJECTED.

You should write your thesis with LaTeX that not only generates formatted style of document but also supports you to learn basis of academic writings; elaborating logical structure, acquiring academic citation style, managing your bibliography with using BibTex, and so on.

If you have no confidence to use LaTeX environment, please download PDF example file and emulate its format–––must including the title page, the page of Abstract of Master' s Thesis, body of thesis, and reference (bibliography)–––on any word processor such as Microsoft Word.

Two types of template are prepared in this page: Standard Engineering and Chicago Manual of Style. Please discuss how to write your thesis with your supervisor and choose suitable format for your reserach style.

How to setup LaTeX Environment on Mac OS X

The LaTeX templates provided in this page have been modified from Japanese base LaTeX style format. Therefore, if you have not used LaTeX yet, please follow the step by step tutorial as below. But this is only for Mac OS X. If you like to use Windows or other OS, please try to setup by yourself.

Install the following

1. Download the latest MacTeX distribution from Official site http://www.tug.org/mactex/ Mactex distribution includes all the tools necessary for writing Latex documents such as TeXShop, BibDesk, LaTeXiT, TeX Live Utility, the spell checker Excalibur, Ghostscript 9.16 and the actual TeX Live 2015 distribution.

Only for Lion or earlier versions of Mac

1. TeXShop 3.58 download (mirrored from http://pages.uoregon.edu/koch/texshop/)
Once MacTeX-20xx.mpkg is installed, replace [TeXshop.app] with the one downloaded from "TeXshop 3.58 for Lion".
2. UTF8 Script download here and move files to (~/Library/TeXShop/bin)

Settings in TeXShop (OS X Lion) → Mountain Lion user please refer here

1. [TeXShop] > [Preferences] > [Engine]
- Change [TeX + dvips + distiller] > [Tex] to 
 ~/Library/TeXShop/bin/ptex2pdf-utf8
- Change「TeX + dvips + distiller] > [LaTeX」to
 ~/Library/TeXShop/bin/platex2pdf-utf8
- Change [BibTeX Engine] to
 pbibtex

2. [TeXShop] > [Preferences] > [Source]
- Change [Encoding] to
 Unicode(UTF-8)

3. [TeXShop] > [Preferences] > [Typesetting]
- Change [Default Script] to
 [Tex + DVI]

Settings in TeXShop (OS X Mountain Lion)

1. [TeXShop] > [Preferences] > [Engine]
- Change [TeX + dvips + distiller] > [Tex] to 
simpdftex etex --maxpfb --extratexopts "-file-line-error -synctex=1"
- Change「TeX + dvips + distiller] > [LaTeX」to
simpdftex platex --mode dvipdfmx --maxpfb --extratexopts "-file-line-error"

- Change [Encoding] to
 Unicode(UTF-8)

- Change [Default Script] to
 [Tex + DVI]

4.(日本語ユーザーのみ) [TeXShop] > [Preferences] > [詳細]
「保存時の処理」(日本語濁点問題の対処)
の<UTF-8-MACをUTF-8に自動変換>にチェックを入れる。
